What is solderless guitar wiring?

Traditional guitar wiring relies on soldered connections between pickups, pots, switches, capacitors and the output jack.

Solderless guitar wiring uses purpose-designed connectors instead, allowing compatible pickup and ground wires to be connected directly to a professionally assembled harness.

The result is a guitar wiring system that can be installed without soldering and, importantly, allows compatible pickups to be changed without repeatedly rebuilding the wiring inside your guitar.

ObsidianWire’s Pro-Wired™ electronics use its Plug, Play & Enjoy™ connectors to make pickup changes and installation easier while retaining professionally assembled electronics. (ObsidianWire)

Solderless doesn’t mean basic

A solderless harness can contain sophisticated electronics and advanced switching just like a traditional soldered circuit.

Depending on the model, an ObsidianWire harness can include features such as:

  • Intelligent pickup switching
  • Coil splitting
  • Series/parallel switching
  • Phase switching
  • Blender controls
  • Treble bleed circuits
  • Additional pickup combinations
  • Custom control tapers
  • Premium CTS® potentiometers
  • PureTone® or Switchcraft® jacks
  • Oak® and Schaller® switches

The difference is primarily how the connections are made, not how sophisticated the circuit can be.

Why use solderless guitar wiring?

Change pickups without soldering

One of the biggest advantages of solderless wiring is making future pickup changes easier.

With traditional wiring, changing a pickup normally involves heating solder joints, removing wires and reconnecting everything when the new pickup is installed.

With a compatible solderless harness, the pickup can instead be disconnected from the harness and replaced without repeatedly soldering directly to the guitar’s controls.

This makes solderless wiring particularly useful for guitarists who like to experiment with different pickups.

Install your wiring upgrade at home

A professionally assembled wiring harness removes much of the complexity of building a guitar circuit from scratch.

You don’t need to design the circuit, select every component or solder every connection yourself.

You still need to follow the installation instructions carefully and confirm that the harness is compatible with your guitar, pickups and hardware.

Get professionally assembled electronics

A major advantage of a pre-wired harness is that the circuit is assembled before it reaches your guitar.

ObsidianWire uses custom-specified CTS® potentiometers, premium switches, PureTone® and Switchcraft® jacks and polyester film capacitors across its range. (ObsidianWire)

The result is a clean, consistent installation without having to build the entire circuit yourself.

Solderless Stratocaster Wiring

Stratocasters offer enormous potential for wiring modifications.

A conventional SSS Strat can be upgraded with alternative switching, blender controls or additional pickup combinations, while HSS and HSH configurations can introduce even more possibilities.

ObsidianWire currently offers a range of solderless Strat wiring solutions, including Vintage, HSS/HSH, 7-Way, Blender and HH configurations. (ObsidianWire)

HSS and HSH Strat wiring

HSS guitars create an interesting wiring challenge.

Humbuckers typically benefit from 500k controls, while many Strat single coils are traditionally paired with 250k controls.

ObsidianWire’s Custom HSS / HSH Gen2 uses intelligent switching to provide 500k operation for the humbucker and 250k operation for the single coils. It also includes automatic coil splitting and an optional 7-way/Gilmour modification. (ObsidianWire)

Solderless Telecaster Wiring

Telecaster wiring may look simple, but there are several useful ways to modify it.

A standard 3-way circuit can be replaced with a 4-way configuration to add a series pickup combination, or with a 7-way arrangement for additional pickup options.

ObsidianWire offers solderless Telecaster harnesses including:

  • Vintage 3-Way
  • Custom 4-Way
  • Universal Tele
  • Nashville 7-Way configurations

The Custom 4-Way for Tele adds a high-output series position while retaining the familiar Telecaster pickup combinations. (ObsidianWire)

Solderless Les Paul Wiring

Les Paul guitars are another excellent application for solderless wiring.

Traditional Les Paul wiring can be upgraded with different volume and tone control configurations, 50s wiring, coil splitting and additional switching options.

ObsidianWire’s MKII for Les Paul provides selectable Vintage 50s and Modern 60s wiring. (ObsidianWire)

For players looking for considerably more flexibility, The Ultimate Wiring for Les Paul // JP Mod adds:

  • Selectable 50s / 60s Plus wiring
  • Dual coil splitting
  • Series switching
  • Phase switching
  • Solderless installation

The system is designed around four-conductor pickups and provides a broad range of sounds without requiring additional body modifications. (ObsidianWire)

Can you change guitar pickups without soldering?

Yes—provided your wiring harness and pickup are compatible.

This is one of the main advantages of solderless guitar wiring.

Instead of soldering the pickup directly to the controls, the pickup wires connect to a purpose-designed connector on the harness.

However, solderless does not mean universal.

Different pickup manufacturers can use different wire colours and wiring conventions, and some pickup configurations require additional conductors for features such as coil splitting.

Always check the wiring instructions for your specific pickup and harness before installation.

Is solderless guitar wiring better than traditional wiring?

Not necessarily. They are different approaches.

Traditional soldered wiring remains an excellent choice for completely custom circuits or builders who want to create their own wiring from individual components.

  • Solderless wiring has a different advantage: simplicity and repeatability.
  • For a completely custom one-off circuit, soldering may be preferable.

For a professionally designed upgrade that you can install and modify more easily, solderless wiring offers a compelling alternative.

Feature Traditional Wiring Solderless Wiring
Soldering required Yes No
Pickup changes More involved Easier
DIY installation Requires soldering skills Designed for easier installation

Future pickup changes Usually requires soldering Much easier

Is solderless guitar wiring reliable?

The reliability of a solderless system depends on the quality of the connectors, components and construction.

A poorly designed solderless system isn’t automatically better than traditional soldering.

That’s why the quality of the harness matters.

ObsidianWire combines solderless connectors with professionally assembled circuits and premium components, including custom CTS® pots, Oak® and Schaller® switches and PureTone® jacks. (ObsidianWire)

The connectors are designed to securely hold the pickup wires, while installation instructions specify how wires should be prepared and inserted. (ObsidianWire)

What should you check before buying a solderless wiring harness?

Before ordering, check these five things.

1. Guitar model

Make sure the harness is designed to fit your guitar or that the manufacturer provides the necessary adjustments.

2. Pickup configuration

Check whether your guitar uses SSS, HSS, HSH, HH or another configuration.

3. Pickup wiring

Some features, particularly coil splitting, require four-conductor humbuckers.

4. Pot and control-hole dimensions

Different guitars can use different control-hole sizes, shaft specifications and knob types.

For example, ObsidianWire specifies particular hole sizes, knob compatibility and cavity-depth requirements for its Les Paul harnesses. (ObsidianWire)

5. Left- or right-handed configuration

Not every harness fits both orientations, so check before ordering.

Always check the individual product’s compatibility information before purchase.
